How much can a medical family history be overcome?

Just a curious guy by nature.Doing some reading and wondering how much people’s medical family history can be overcome by minimizing controllable risk factors?
You hear of families with histories of serious illnesses, realizing that genetics can be a frightening thing. So in some families are people almost assuredly handed an early death sentence, even with a highly healthy lifestyle or can someone make a family history nearly irrelevant?

quite well in a lot of cases apart from ****** cancer and huntingdon’s chorea
my father dies at 34 and my mother at 48 both from strok
I do not drink (like my father ) or eat fatty food or have a high salt diet (like my mother) and I am now pushing 60 so i reckon on am on bonus time (not borrowed time)
