Hi T,
You need to get approval from your school and the business before you can do any surveys. In addition you may also have to submit your proposal to an ethics committee to ensure you are not putting anyone at risk and if you are putting someone at risk then you need to explain on how you will mitigate it. You may feel surveys are low risk and for the most part, you are right. However some questions, regardless of how sublime you feel them to be, can be distressing for some people and how you deal with it becomes a part of your research plan. Until you have your survey approved it is best not to look for places due to the fact most businesses will require that it is approved before considering the survey. Normally this will require submitting the approved survey for their review. Even if you are considering doing your survey at a park or talking to the public you will still have to comply with the laws in your area, which most likely include having the survey approved. Best advice is to get it approved first and then begin considering places to contact.
