What type of schooling does it take to become an elementary school teacher?

Georgia Due Jan.12.2011 asked:

Which schools are best?
What types of degrees do I need?
How long would I have to continue my education after high school?
Etc.

A 4-year degree in Education with a teaching specialization in a specific subject area (math, enlish, science, history, etc.) – plus meeting the credentialing requirements of your state – such as doing one semester as a student teacher, passing a certification test, etc.

It only takes 4 years beyond HS.

Which schools are best? Depends on the state you live in…your state universities should be plenty good enough

    1. Bachelors degree in either secondary or elementary education (4 years)

    2. The required observation hours in a public school

    3. Praxis test/certification test your state requires

    4. Your student teaching/internship semester

    5. OR….you could get a degree in whatever you want and then go the alternate certification route.

Look for a school with a reputation as being a teaching college…state colleges are usually the most cost effective, and have a better reputation at producing good quality teachers.

It really depends on the school whether you will receive a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Mine is a B.S., however some of the other teachers at my school have a B.A.

You can feasibly do this in four years, however, most people do it in five years. My school would only grant special permission to take more than 15 credits a semester, which unless you’d take summer classes, puts you into the five year category.

Please keep in mind, that most states require you to continue your education at the graduate level in order to maintain your teaching certificate. You also must pass state liscensing exams before you can get your first teaching position. Good luck!

You’ll need a bachelor’s in education. That will take 4 years. You will also need a teaching certificate in the state of your choosing, and you will also need to take a PRAXIS test in your specialty.

Any four-year university or college will most likely offer this career.
